Lesson 1

Project objective

  • explain to students the importance of maintaining cleanliness in nature.
  • to develop students’ 4K skills
  • to conduct an experiment so that each student understands the importance of preserving the purity of nature.

Teacher’s Guide

  • In the experimental part of the project, students work in groups of 3-4 people.
  • Students should be familiar with topics like ecology.
  • Before starting the experimental part, familiarize and provide students with all the necessary materials.
  • Give a brief instruction on how to work with hot glue.

To evaluate the project, in the first week, provide this material (PBL rubrics) to students in order to:

  • the students previously understood what criteria they needed to prepare for,
  • the students were able to give an appropriate assessment to their colleagues in detail.

Safety precautions in Steam lessons

Before starting the lesson, the teacher is recommended to familiarize himself with safety precautions. If necessary (in the case of using the subjects specified in the TB), conduct a brief briefing of students. Follow the link safety precautions in Steam lessons

The theoretical part

Nature is the initial platform for humanity, the foundation without which it would not be possible to exist. And how does our society thank her? According to statistics, over the past 50 years, humanity has destroyed 90% of the world’s large fish stocks, 70% of the world’s forests, 30% of all known resources of the planet … and this list can be continued for a very long time. But nature cannot ignore our actions and includes a protective mechanism. Shifting magnetic poles, frequent typhoons, floods and earthquakes, global warming are nature’s response to human activity.

And do we really think that with rallies and actions we can stop the destruction of our planet? Each of us must radically rethink the importance of nature. After all, the world around us gives us everything we need: air, water, food. And we use natural resources in many areas: industry, agriculture. Each of us must realize the responsibility that lies on us.

Pollution of water, land and air can directly affect the health and quality of life of people.

Soil pollution is one of the priority problems of the world. The health of all living organisms on Earth and the quality of food grown depend on the quality of the land.

Environmental issues are important for everyone, because everything in the world is interconnected. If a violation occurs in one area, other areas will suffer as well. Therefore, in order to reduce these problems, society and each individual must take care of the environment, which is what is happening!

Preparation for the practical part:

1. Students should learn the definition of clean water, as it is intended for safe human consumption.

2. Show the students simulated wastewater and let them use the motion technique to detect the smell of the compound.

3. Describe the available filter materials to the students and ask them to study any materials they are not familiar with (usually zeolite and activated carbon).

Step 1. Take 1 box and fill it with water, and throw garbage into clean water, pollute the water. We throw the soil into the water

Step 2. Now we try to clean the water with our hands, that is, we collect all the garbage that we threw. We are looking at the result of whether the students were able to clean the water with their hands that polluted.

Now we are conducting 2 experiments. We will find out during which experiment it will be possible to take clean water

Experiment 1

The practical part

Step 1. Take 2 glasses. And we pour contaminated water into one of them. And we leave the second one empty.

Step 2. We take the bandage, rewind the long strip, cut it off and fold the bandage several times. And now we will twist the bandage into a tight tourniquet

Step 3. Put a glass of dirty water just above the empty glass, lower the tourniquet from the bandage into one and into the other glass.

Step 4. Leave it for a day and we will observe whether the water will be purified

What kind of water should not be drunk anyway?
Do not delude yourself that spring (well) water is useful. Such flows from unknown sources, it can be infested with giardia, bacilli and other microorganisms that cause diarrhea and dehydration.

The spring may have a radioactive source. Or the key can pass through landfills of household waste, flow through soil rich in iron or calcium salts. The use of such water can be harmful to health.

Now you know about the dangers that can be in seemingly clean water. And about ways to purify water at home without a filter. Use the information you receive — it’s not difficult. Stay healthy!

Homework

Think about at home with your parents why water should be boiled before use?!
