Lesson 2
Survey
Let’s do a survey and find out which part of the class has vision problems. There are some tips for making a survey:
– Determine the objectives of the survey, that is, you need to determine what you want to get through the survey. Depending on the purpose, the questions of the questionnaires should correspond to the main tasks.
– Think about what questions, wording or ways you can achieve the most truthful answers.
– Decide with your team which survey method is best for you. Can be conducted through online questionnaires or offline format. Each method has its pros and cons.
– Finally, you need to analyze the results of the survey. Enter the results of different forms into a single database. Can be used as an Excel collection and analysis tool. Here you can use formulas, create tables and graphs, charts, histograms. We will learn how to make statistics using charts, build graphs next week.
Below we have given questions as an example of conducting a survey. The purpose of the survey is to find out which part of the class has vision problems. What part of the class went to the test and what helped to solve vision problems. And also, to find out whether visual acuity depends on age.
| How old are you? | ||
| Do you see well? | Yes. | No. |
| Have you been checked by an ophthalmologist? | Yes. | No. |
| If checked, what is the diopter value? | ||
| Do you wear glasses? | Yes. | No. |
| Do you wear contact lenses? | Yes. | No. |
| Have you had vision correction surgery? | Yes. | No. |
Suppose that as a result of the survey, out of 23 students in the class
– only 5 can see well.
– One of them underwent vision correction surgery.
– 3 students see poorly but have not been checked before by a doctor.
Of the remaining 15 students,
– 5 wear glasses with “-1”, 2 wear lenses with “-1”.
– 3 wear glasses with “-2”, 2 wear lenses with “-2”.
– 3 – wear glasses with a diopter value of “-3” or more.
In the form of a table it will be more convenient.
| № | How old are you? | Do you see well? | Have you been checked by an ophthalmologist? | If checked, what is the diopter value? | Do you wear glasses? | Do you wear contact lenses? | Have you had vision correction surgery? |
| 1 | 12 years old | Yes. | Yes. | 0 | No. | No. | No. |
| 2 | 12 years old | Yes. | No. | 0 | No. | No. | No. |
| 3 | 13 years old | Yes. | No. | 0 | No. | No. | Yes. |
| 4 | 14 years old | Yes. | No. | 0 | No. | No. | No. |
| 5 | 14 years old | Yes. | No. | 0 | No. | No. | No. |
| 6 | 13 years old | No. | No. | I do not know | No. | No. | No. |
| 7 | 12 years old | No. | No. | I do not know | No. | No. | No. |
| 8 | 13 years old | No. | No. | I do not know | No. | No. | No. |
| 9 | 12 years old | No. | Yes. | -1 | Yes. | No. | No. |
| 10 | 14 years old | No. | Yes. | -1 | Yes. | No. | No. |
| 11 | 13 years old | No. | Yes. | -1 | Yes. | No. | No. |
| 12 | 14 years old | No. | Yes. | -1 | Yes. | No. | No. |
| 13 | 13 years old | No. | Yes. | -1 | Yes. | No. | No. |
| 14 | 12 years old | No. | Yes. | -1 | No. | Yes. | No. |
| 15 | 12 years old | No. | Yes. | -1 | No. | Yes. | No. |
| 16 | 13 years old | No. | Yes. | -2 | Yes. | No. | No. |
| 17 | 13 years old | No. | Yes. | -2 | Yes. | No. | No. |
| 18 | 14 years old | No. | Yes. | -2 | Yes. | No. | No. |
| 19 | 13 years old | No. | Yes. | -2 | No. | Yes. | No. |
| 20 | 12 years old | No. | Yes. | -2 | No. | Yes. | No. |
| 21 | 14 years old | No. | Yes. | -3 | Yes. | No. | No. |
| 22 | 14 years old | No. | Yes. | -3 | Yes. | No. | No. |
| 23 | 13 years old | No. | Yes. | -3 | Yes. | No. | No. |
From the survey and without graphs, it can be seen that most of them have problems with visual acuity. It can also be assumed that visual acuity does not depend on gender, since their number is approximately the same. The age of the students is the same, so we cannot say that visual acuity directly depends on age, for this we need more data.
Next week, based on the results, we will learn how to build graphs and determine if there is a problem. If we are convinced that the problem exists, then we will try to find and offer solutions.
Homework
Before the next lesson, each group should conduct a survey throughout the school. Use the tips above and make a detailed questionnaire. Choose a survey method, choose interesting questions, and collect data. Remember, the more people you interview, the more accurate the result will be, and this requires organized teamwork.
