Lesson 2

Students are building an experimental setup that will transmit light signals using an LED and a switch.

Assembly instructions

1 | Take a sheet of cardboard measuring 18 x 8 cm, a ruler and a knife.

2 | Using a hot glue gun, glue a stir stick to the center of the cardboard base.

3 | Take two 30cm pieces of wire. Use a wire stripper to remove about 2cm of the plastic covering on both ends of the wires.

4 | Remove a 5cm piece of cardboard 3cm above and below the stir stick as shown.

5 | Cut a 2cm X 7cm strip of cardboard, center it, align it with the 3cm cuts and hot glue it in place as shown.

6 | Repeat step 5, gluing a 2cm X 7cm strip on top of the previous strip.

7 | Apply a bead of glue to the end of a stir stick and line it up over the stick where the cardboard covers it and glue another stir stick on top as shown.

8 | Attach one of the wires to the base and bottom stir stick as shown in the picture.

9 | Cut a circle out of cardboard and insert a stir stick into the center of the corrugation.

10 | Thread another wire through the center of the circle’s corrugation, over the stir stick.

11 | Bend the stripped wire back so that it bends over the round piece of cardboard.

12 | Pass the back ends of both wires through the corrugation of the top cardboard strip at the back.

13 | Check your wrench to make sure the wires are touching each other metal to metal when you press on it.

Congratulations! Continue with the remaining instructions to complete the telegraph assembly.

Now you need to assemble the chain and check the model.

1 | Insert the LED bulb with the long leg (+) into the breadboard as shown in the diagram. Then insert the two wires from the clothespin into the breadboard according to the diagram.

2 | Place the batteries in the holder and connect the wires to the breadboard. If the wire frays, twist the fibers together.

3 | Test your warning light by pressing the switch. This completes your circuit and powers the LED.

Great! You have completed the LED warning light. These parts will also be used in the next exercise!
