Lesson 2
Theoretical part
How to start sorting garbage at home?
If you’re just getting started sorting, start with one category. Collect Plastic, glass, or paper. Once you start learning, try adding another category. Dangerous items such as batteries, batteries, and thermometers can be collected and taken to a special reception area.
The next step is to prepare a second recyclable container at home. You throw into it all the waste that can be recycled. And throw away unrecyclable waste into the old dishes.
What to do with food waste?
Food waste can be disposed of separately. If you live in a city apartment, you can install a disposer on your kitchen sink. City wastewater treatment plants with sewage passing through a grinder are processed and turned into biogas or soil.

What can be handed over right in the yard?
The collected waste paper, glass, metal, plastic bottles, and canisters can be recycled. In large cities, separate containers for each type of waste are installed near the houses.
Glass, cardboard, aluminum, and plastic waste can also be collected in one container as a recyclable material. Later they will be sorted in sorting places.
Try washing and drying the items you send in as raw materials. There is no need to take the label or adhesive tape off the dishes.
Accumulators, batteries, thermometers, expired medicines, household chemicals, dyes, and appliances are hazardous waste. They must not be disposed of together with other waste, as hazardous substances (mercury, lead, nickel, cadmium, alkalis) are released from them and distributed into the environment. Yards may not have containers for discarding such items, so they should be moved to designated collection areas.
If you don’t have separate recycle bins in your yard, you’ll need to take them to a recycling facility.

It’s not as hard as you think
- Start small. It is not necessary to immediately put a separate container for all types of waste and carry them to the collection point every day. For example, you can donate waste paper once a month and donate or exchange unwanted clothes.
- Don’t be afraid to make a mistake when starting one business. It doesn’t have to be perfect all at once. Even one plastic bottle sent for recycling is a big step forward.
- You can treat it like a game and then go deeper. Thus, you can create an optimal sorting method yourself. Watch your habits change, and after you try your first sorted trash, bring your favorite dessert as a reward.
- You can also mark the path using smartphone apps or a notepad and follow the path of development, and changes. This will help you in any endeavor, not just sorting.

Practical part
In this tutorial, we will create a wastebasket and place the Arduino in a box.
- First, make a cardboard box frame. Choose the size and shape that are convenient for you so that the garbage can fit inside. In the photo, a box 40 cm high, with sides 20 cm, is made in the form of a triangle.

- According to the size of the carton, cut out 3 walls at the bottom and center of the roof. Attach one to the bottom with glue. Place the other, as in the picture, on the upper side.

- Make a hole in the part that is in the middle so that the debris can fit. Then make a tube out of cardboard to let this debris pass through and secure it with glue. The sensor will be located along this path.

- Install the servo on one wall of the box and make a hole as in the photo.

- Cut out a square from cardboard and glue it to the servo motor. This will be the door that goes up and down.

- Now make a fence for toys.

- Make a small hole for the sensor and install the sensor on the larger pipe we made earlier. Remove the extra pieces of cardboard next to the sensor bulbs so they don’t get in the way. The sensor should only see debris that falls through the pipe.

- Make a door on the back wall to get out the trash accumulated in the box.
- You can make a lid and close it.
- You can decorate as you wish.
Homework
Have the students sort the garbage in their homes before the next lesson. Do this within a week and ask them to express their thoughts in the next lesson. About what were the difficulties. If there are suggestions or wishes, prepare them.
Prepare a presentation for the next lesson. What has been done in this project? If you have some sorting experiments in your home during the week, offer to share your thoughts on them. Finally, it will be necessary to finish with the conclusion. You can use different types of photos, videos, blogs, vlogs, and presentations.
