Week 3

4. Cylinders

Previously, we measured the circumference of a plastic cylinder connector. For the cylinders themselves, it is necessary to take a circumference less than that of the connector. We got the circumference of the plastic connector to be 6.5 cm. For the cylinders themselves, we took a length of 6.2 cm. Thus, the radius of the circumference of the cylinder should be 3.1 cm (divide the length by 2).

Take a sheet of white cardboard. Using a compass, draw 8 circles on it with a radius of 3.1 cm. Cut out the circles.

On a sheet of cardboard, draw a rectangle according to the dimensions shown below. Cut out 0.5 cm wide rectangular pieces of cardboard, 8 pieces for each cylinder.

Draw 4 center lines on the inner sides of the circles as shown below. Bend the cut-out pieces of cardboard into a rectangular shape along the fold lines.

Glue the folded ends of the pieces of cardboard to the center lines of the circle.

Attention!!! Do not apply glue close to the edge of the cylinder as adhesive residue may interfere with the movement of the cylinder inside the plastic connectors. The areas of application of glue are indicated in the pictures in red.

On sheets of cardboard (any color), draw 4 rectangles 5.8 cm wide for the entire length of the cardboard. Cut out the pieces for the outside of the cylinder.

Glue the outer part of the cylinder by applying glue to each piece of cardboard in the central part (red indicates the area to be glued).

1. Cut 4 pieces of cardboard measuring 1.5 cm x 5.5 cm.

2. Step back 1.5 cm from above and below and draw a line

3. Draw a line through the middle of the width

4. Draw a perpendicular in the middle of the segment that is located at the top and bottom of the piece of cardboard

Poke a hole with a pen at the intersection of the line at the top and bottom of the pieces of cardboard (hole for the wooden skewer).

  • Cut 4 pieces of wooden skewers measuring 4 cm.
  • Put the ends of the skewers into the holes of the parts and secure them by applying thermoplastic glue to the outer parts of the part (the area of application of the glue is shown by the green arrow). !!! Do not apply glue to the inside of the part as this may interfere with the smooth operation of the engine.
  • Glue the parts in the middle of the bottom of the cylinders.
  • Cut off a piece of the juice straw. Make an incision along the width of a piece of tubing.
  • Put (wrap) a piece of straw on a wooden skewer of the part.
  • Secure the edges with thermoplastic glue (apply in the middle).
  • Cut 2 pieces from an ice cream stick (see pictures below for dimensions).
  • Connect them and glue in the middle of the part to the straw at an angle of 90о.

Glue the sticks in the same way to the rest of the cylinders
